Pedigrees:
A Pedigree of an animal, or
person, is it's geneology or ancestry, usually available to the
purchaser or a purebred animal back fro 3 to 5, or more,
generations. Obviously, there is no guarantee
that a Sire and Dam decended from a line of champions will
automatically produce all champions in
their offspring, because of the importance of good
nurturing. But it is generally accepted that disposition and
trainablity is passed on to some extent. Even more important is
the ability of a pedigree to disclose the amount of inbreeding that has
taken place in an animals ancestry. Because of the relatively small breeding pool in many breeds of animals (including Irish Setters), it is up extreme value to know that an individual you purchase has a low Coefficient of Inbreeding. High incidences of inbreeding are known to have increased the liklihood for undesirable traits in dogs and other animals. Examples of common, undesireable traits that have resulted from dog inbreeding are hip dysplasia and aggressiveness. . . one, a physical trait and one of bad disposition. A quality breeder, concerned with the future of their breed, takes inbreeding into account when pairing breeding mates. (All breedings approved by Dancinsettetters Kennel are strictly planned and monitored to emphasize a low COI). On most pedigrees, championship and other titles are often listed. For American Kennel Club Irish Setter pedigrees, these are in the areas of: Conformation; Obedience and Hunting/Field Trials. Here is a chart of the abbreviations used:
